Habit Tracker Apps: 6 Options and a Simple Fit Check

The best habit tracker app depends on what you need to record and who should see it. Loop is a free option for private Android tracking. DuoKeep suits two people who already want one shared daily goal. For Apple tasks, several devices, selective friend sharing or a game, use the shortlist below. Need a free plan? Find a starting option by devices, sharing and habit count.

Write one completion rule before choosing. Then check whether the app handles a completed action, a partial attempt, a planned day off and a missing report in a way you can use.

Decide what the app must record

Choose the record unit, schedule and audience first. A tracker that fits your phone can still fail your plan if it treats three minutes and five minutes as the same result, or shows your private habits to the wrong person.

Choose Done, a count or a duration

A simple Done record suits a rule such as “prepare tomorrow’s bag.” If you need to keep pages, repetitions or minutes, check for a quantity or duration record. A note saying “three minutes” and a duration field you can total answer different questions.

For example, “practice guitar for at least five minutes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday” gives you a threshold and a schedule. Three minutes is a partial attempt under that proposed rule. Wednesday is outside the schedule. A blank Friday is an unknown report. Check how each case affects the app’s history and streak.

Need help writing the rule? The habit ideas and rule builder lets you choose an action and completion condition before you shop for features.

If you need a finished-result total by a deadline, or tasks with named owners, compare goal tracker apps by the record you need. Daily practice and completed project output can require separate records.

Decide who should see it

Personal device sync means your own phone, tablet or computer can show your records. Friend visibility means another person can see selected records. A common pair goal gives two people the same rule, with each person reporting their own action. Party quests add a game consequence to personal tasks. These formats can overlap; the label “social” does not tell you which one you will get.

For two-person use, also agree on the goal date when you live in different time zones. If the app offers shared progress, check whether it means two independent reports, a shared total or one joint streak. See the shared habit tracker comparison for the pair-specific details.

Six options for different plans

The starting cost below describes the checked plan or storefront. Prices can vary by country and platform. A free plan still needs to support your habit count, devices and essential feature.

Loop Habit Tracker: free private tracking on Android

Starting cost: free. Loop is an Android app that works offline without an account. Its official pages describe unlimited habits, flexible frequencies and no ads or in-app purchases. It is a useful starting option when you want a personal log on Android without paying for a plan. See the official Loop site and project documentation.

Loop can export CSV and its database. A spreadsheet export lets you read data; it does not automatically prove that another app can import it or that your backup can be restored. The officially linked FAQ distinguishes skipping from missing and says there is no official iOS version. Check the current schedule and recovery behavior before relying on them.

Streaks: Apple tasks with timers and optional sharing

Starting cost: $5.99 in the checked US App Store. Streaks supports up to 24 tasks, timed tasks, personal iCloud sync and supported Apple Health integrations. The current listing covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and Apple Vision. See the US listing and official site.

Streaks also documents sharing tasks with other Streaks users. If you want Apple task sharing, check the behavior against your intended reports. We have not tested whether it produces the joint streak you may want.

The listing also mentions eligible Family Sharing of the purchase. Purchase sharing and task-progress sharing are separate features. Check your family eligibility and the actual task-sharing behavior instead of assuming that two users always need two separate purchases.

Habitify: personal records and shared Circles

Starting cost: a free plan with three habits. The current Habitify pricing table includes personal cross-platform sync on Free. Premium adds features such as off mode, advanced reminders and integrations. Read the checkmarks and crosses in the plan column; a feature name appearing in the table does not mean it is included for free.

Habitify is a candidate when your own devices need the same records, with optional group visibility. Its official download page lists mobile, web and desktop clients; check the one you need. Its Circle guide explains how to join through an invitation link and select personal habits to share. Members can see the selected habit’s goal, current streak and three-month progress map; notes and mood entries stay private, according to Habitify.

A Circle’s Unity Streak grows when every active member completes at least one eligible shared habit that day. Members can complete different habits. Habitify requires a daily goal scheduled for that day and a Done report entered for the current day; Skip, Fail and backdated entries do not count. Newly shared habits start contributing the following day.

For example, one member could complete a reading goal and another a guitar goal. Their eligible completions can support the Circle streak without establishing that both practiced guitar. This is a proposed example based on the documented rules, not an app trial.

Habitify’s sharing restrictions exclude its Bad Habit type. Off mode can excuse a member from the Unity Streak, but the pricing table lists Off mode under Premium. The public table does not specify Circle allowances, so confirm access on your chosen plan rather than assuming all sharing is free. Check your country, store and full billing total for an upgrade.

HabitShare: separate habits shared with selected friends

Starting cost: free. HabitShare’s official site lists iOS and Android support, daily and weekly habits, and privacy controls for each habit and friend. Habits are private by default. This is a candidate when you want to track your own habits and choose which friends can see them.

For example, you could share a practice habit with one friend while keeping another habit private. Before using real records, check the permissions from both sides. A friend seeing your habit is different from both of you contributing to one common goal; choose according to the report you want to review.

DuoKeep: one daily rule for two people

Starting cost: one active goal free per pair. DuoKeep is available for iOS and Android. Both people join one goal and report separately with Done or Rest day; a missing report remains distinguishable. This suits an existing friend or partner who wants the same daily completion rule. Optional Plus expands goal capacity for the subscriber’s pairs.

DuoKeep’s shared streak requires both people to report Done for the same goal date. Rest does not preserve that shared streak. The goal uses its creator’s time zone. If your essential requirement is a numerical log, selected weekdays, several independent personal habits or finding a new partner, use the appropriate alternative or format instead.

Our detailed DuoKeep comparison explains the checked rules, free allowance and limitations. The two-person setup guide helps you agree on what counts as complete before inviting someone.

Habitica: personal tasks with RPG rewards and parties

Starting cost: free, with optional in-app purchases. Habitica turns habits, daily tasks and to-dos into a role-playing game. Its official features page describes rewards, equipment, parties and quests. The current US App Store description says the app can be enjoyed free and offers optional subscriptions.

Habitica is a candidate if earning game rewards is part of the experience you want. In party quests, missed daily tasks can have consequences for the group. That is a different agreement from letting a friend view a private log, or requiring two people to complete one common habit. Discuss those consequences before joining a party.

Try one candidate with the free trial sheet

Use one test habit and the six cases below to check your essential requirement. Record the app, plan, country/store and date alongside the results. Write Unknown for anything you have not checked; a product page can help shortlist an app, but it does not establish your own trial result.

Download the two-page habit tracker app trial sheet (PDF). It has 17 fillable fields, a printable blank worksheet and a fictional guitar example. Use a PDF reader that supports forms and save a local copy; browser PDF viewers can handle forms differently.

First, write the action, planned days, record unit, required devices, audience, habit count, budget and one requirement that must work. If a paid app has no suitable trial, use the documentation to decide whether you want to buy it and leave untested behavior marked Unknown.

Example reportInterpretationNext adjustment
Five minutes of guitar practiceComplete under the proposed five-minute rule.Enter a test report; inspect the unit, history and streak.

Friday: no reportUnknown; the action may or may not have happened.Check how absence appears before interpreting it as failure.
A second device or person needs the recordSync or visibility is an essential requirement.Inspect the second view and the permissions, not just the first screen.
You need to preserve or move recordsReadable export and restorable backup are different needs.Check the exported format and recovery path; keep the originals during the trial.

The guitar reports are invented to explain the test cases. They are not observations from any of these apps. The app’s response is what you write in the blank results fields.

Keep or switch after the trial

Keep the candidate if it supports the requirement you wrote and recording feels practical. Switch the app or adjust the rule if an essential feature fails. Leave the decision Unknown when the necessary behavior is still untested.

A private Android plan with no payment can start by checking Loop’s record unit and schedule. An Apple plan needing supported Health data can start with Streaks, checking the exact task and purchase. An existing iOS/Android pair with one daily Done rule can start with DuoKeep, checking both reports and the common goal date. These are starting routes, not guarantees that every requirement is met.

Before changing tools, preserve your records and check any export you need. If the problem is that the proposed action is too large or poorly timed, changing the app may not solve it. For a concrete routine example, see how to build a reading habit.

Questions about free and shared habit trackers

Which habit tracker app is free?

Loop and HabitShare describe their apps as free. Habitify has a three-habit free plan, DuoKeep offers one active free goal per pair, and Habitica offers free use with optional purchases. Streaks was a paid $5.99 purchase in the checked US listing. Choose according to the features you need on that starting plan, rather than treating all “free” labels as the same allowance.

Which options work for an iPhone and Android pair?

HabitShare supports the two platforms for selective friend visibility. DuoKeep supports them for a common goal with separate reports. Habitica offers iOS and Android game-based tracking, with parties available when that format suits you. Habitify also lists iOS and Android and documents Circle sharing; check Circle access and the second person’s view on your chosen app versions and plans. Installing the same app does not by itself mean you share one completion rule.

When should I use a shared daily goal?

Use one when both people want the same completion rule and agree to report their own action. For separate private routines, choose personal tracking or selective visibility. A tracker also does not promise a reply from a friend; agree on any replies or reminders separately. The accountability partner guide includes a check-in agreement for that conversation.

If you already have a partner and one daily rule that suits both of you, you can start one free goal in DuoKeep.
